Recent work

Two products for people who work outside. One shipped to a national firm. The other is a complete rethink based on the three years of work before it.

  • Codifi on an iPad and a MacBook, on the same forest survey project. The iPad shows the survey’s features on a 3D satellite map of a wooded hillside. The laptop’s web app shows the project’s map, with a flagged boundary in red, above a table of its records and their progress.

    2023 to 2026

Geospatial field data collection SaaS for crews with no signal.

    • 20+ office rolloutI led one workflow into more than twenty offices and practice groups at once.
    • Offline without doubtI designed and built the states that show what is saved and what has gone up.
    • GIS in the fieldI built mapping and receiver integrations for bright sun, gloved hands and no signal.
    • One product systemI led design across web, mobile, brand and marketing.
  • Tephra on a MacBook and an iPhone. The web app lists six survey projects over a satellite map of North America, two of them pinned. The phone’s home screen greets Maria with the project in the field today, Cedar Hollow Phase I Survey, an Open project button and this week’s projects.

    Since October 2026

A rethink of field capture I’m building to go deep on native: iPhone, Apple Watch, Android, a GNSS receiver and ARKit.

    • The dockA sheet over the map built the way Find My’s is.
    • Day logWhen the phone dies the watch keeps the day.
    • iOS and AndroidLive Activities on iPhone and the Android way to do the same.
    • GNSS receiverA Bluetooth receiver, read sentence by sentence.

What I do

Design

  • Product and interaction design, from the first sketch to the shipped screen
  • Design systems, and keeping them true across web, mobile and marketing
  • Research in the field, standing next to the person doing the work
  • Brand, App Store and marketing design
  • Film, photography and motion

Engineering

  • TypeScript, React and React Native
  • Native iPhone, Apple Watch and Android: Swift, SwiftUI, Kotlin and Compose
  • Maps and geospatial work: Mapbox, MapLibre, Turf and GPS receivers over Bluetooth
  • Interfaces for software that has to work with no signal
  • Building with AI agents, and writing the docs they need to do it well

Product and people

  • Roadmaps, releases and deciding what not to build
  • Docs, release notes and training
  • Rolling software out to people who liked their old tools
  • Listening, which nine years as a pastor taught me
